Founded in 1862, the University of South Dakota is a regionally accredited institution of higher education that offers undergraduate correspondence courses to prisoners. While they transitioned to online-only course delivery several years ago due to the significant, continued outpouring of requests for courses from prisoners, they are now in the process of converting courses back into a paper-based format.

School Comments: My name is Ben Krush, and I am the program manager for USD’s Correspondence Program. A few years back, the administration made the decision to move all of the correspondence classes onto our D2L (online) shell, and that is the way the program has been going since. Little did they know that they were cutting off a profound population who were enjoying this medium of education. We have been getting flocks of mail from prospective students (inmates) who are very interested in starting back with us. With such information, we are trying to revert back to the complete mail option for correspondence classes. This is proving difficult, but we should be back up in operation starting in January 2014. The graduate courses will be on a limited basis and will number around 5 classes.
