The Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence

Prevention can very well be one of the best cures for reducing the soaring number of individuals who are being sent to prison.

At The Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence located in Providence, Rhode Island, nonviolence training is taught to students, police officers, prison inmates and community members. The mission of the Center is to teach by word and example the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions.

The Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence was founded in 2001 by members of St. Michael's Church and is founded on the nonviolent teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King.

There is always uncertainty at the Institute. It is in the nature of what it does. Sometimes, the streets win one and somebody with good intentions and high hopes falls back. But there is no other place like it. There is no other place where the reality of what people in certain parts of the city deal with every day is so clearly understood.

Other programs include Streetworkers, which act as a positive presence in the streets and is aimed at working with gang-involved or at-risk-youth. The goal is to help these youth build better relationships and to try and mediate conflicts to prevent such violence as stabbings, shootings and homicides.

Youth Programs provides employment opportunities for at-risk-youth and teaches life skills training, leadership development, safe-space awareness and promotes awareness-raising events.

Victim Support Services helps provide services to families and friends of homicide victims and well as those who are victims of shootings and stabbings.

Juvenile Reentry works with soon to be released youth and their families and their Probation and Parole Officers to help them successfully reintegrate into society.
