THE CENTER FOR RETURNING CITIZENS TAPPED FOR LEADERSHIP ROLE FOR 2013 INTERNATIONAL MEN'S DAY

PHILADELPHIA, PA (USA) – 12 August 2013 – Each year approximately 35,000 individuals who have been incarcerated in federal, state, and local correctional facilities return to their families and neighborhoods in the City of Philadelphia – the fifth largest metropolitan area in the United States. For these Men and Women, who are often referred to as “Returning Citizens,” the journey of redemption and reintegration is arduous and challenging. The Center for Returning Citizens (“TCRC”) is the brainchild of Mr. J. Jondhi Harrell, a Thought Leader on social justice and the successful reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals into society. Mr. Harrell serves as the organization's Executive Director. Under his leadership, the organization offers a myriad of services which comprehensively and effectively addresses the unique issues of formerly incarcerated individuals. A global model for healing and repatriation for formerly incarcerated individuals, TCRC has been selected to assume a leadership role for 2013 International Men's Day for Returning Citizens and individuals and organizations that provide resources and support services to them throughout the City of Philadelphia.

The dynamic and valuable work that is performed by The Center for Returning Citizens is in alignment with the mission of International Men's Day. It is helping to bring healing and redemption to individuals and our communities which, in turn, is helping to make our world a better and safer place. The Center for Returning Citizens is the point of contact for 2013 International Men's Day throughout the City of Philadelphia for all Returning Citizens and organizations which provide resources and support services to them who are interested in participating in the worldwide observance. In 2012, the unique challenges and issues of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals were incorporated into the United States' platform for International Men's Day. In January 2013, an initiative which is designed to address the unique challenges and issues of the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated – the International Men's Day Humanization and Repatriation Project – was launched in the United States. The project is, among other things, providing incarcerated individuals with a voice through the observance of International Men's Day in correctional facilities. Several nations that observe International Men's Day are now considering adopting this initiative in their respective countries. The Center for Returning Citizens will also serve as an advisor to the International Men's Day Global Team on this initiative,” remarked D.A. Sears, the United States Coordination for International Men's Day and a member of the International Men's Day Coordination Committee.     Image courtesy www.tcrcphilly.org

TCRC will join organizations and institutions in over 70 nations throughout our global village in observing International Men's Day which will be observed on Tuesday, 19 November 2013 under the theme, “Keeping Men and Boys Safe”. Inaugurated in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago by Jerome Teelucksingh, Ph.D., a Thought Leader on Gender Issues, faculty member in the History Department of the University of West Indies, and author, International Men's Day celebrates and honors the contributions and selfless sacrifices that Men make every day to our families, our communities and our world. It shares a 48-hour partnership with Universal Children's Day which is observed worldwide on 20 November of each year and is endorsed by the United Nations.
